#I have to disagree with Reader

IT IS I! THE WIZARD!

I wanna write a story, but it would be weird to write so here it is:

(Warning: swearing)

A reader who can speak to the dead, can see spirits. They chat often with the villains because they hang around them often, and often ask the reader to tell the Links messages.

The reader collects cursed items, having the strange ability to quell the corrupting powers (for example, they can use Majora's Mask with no negative effect). So they have like cursed knives, Majora, a few shards of the mirror of twilight glued together (I know it's impossible but let me dreeeeaaam-), that kind of stuff.

So like, something like this would happen:

Reader walks up to Four, listening to thr whispers of their spirit friend, Vaati. He had asked to give a message to Link, 'The short one that looks like a f*cked up kinstone', and Reader was too kind to say no. They always knew that spirits that lingered often suffered in pain. Maybe it would help Vaati pass on?

"Hey, Four." Reader said, and Four turned.

"Oh, hello, Reader. Do you need something?"

"I have a message for you." They said, eyes glowing a dim blue, like a luminous stone. "Vaati said 'You're a loser, no maidens?'"

Four passed, a mix of confusion and horror on his face. "I'm sorry, WHO told me WHAT?!"

Reader held Majora in their hands, staring into the great yellow eyes, invested in its whispers. A cough pulled them out of their trance, and Time sat next to it, giving a caughtous glance at the mask. "You seem enamored with that thing."

"I do. . . don't i?" Reader said wistfully. They sighed. "Do you know what it's like. . . seeing the dead? Hearing their woes and being able to do. . . anything? It's painful, watching them suffer."

"Why do you keep it, of you know it's story?" Time asked, frowning. Reader sighed, running a hand on their head.

"You probably wouldn't understand." They explained. "Spirits are more complex than a dungeon clever could be. . . this one has taken a liking to me. . . or. . at least is trying to control me."

Time stiffened. "I've worn it, Majora. He always throws a fit when I do because he cannot invade my mind." Reader explained, turning back to Time and pointing at the marks under their eyes. "These marks are like the ones you have. Proof of my power over it."

Time huffed and Reader suddenly snapped their head back to the mask, eyes glowing blue. Time watched them nod to it, and slowly turn back to Time, eyes still glowing creepily as they slowly asked "He wants to know if you've become a mask salesman too. . ."

"You've lost someone important to you. . . haven't you?" Reader asked Legend on night. He was on watch duty, and the others were asleep. He glared at Reader.

"What?" Legend asked, sounding offended.

"I don't mean to insult!" Reader said quickly. "It's just. . ." Their eyes turned blue, as they looked next to him. The familiar humming of a tune oh so forgien yet familiar to their ears clwas heard only by them, sung by the spirit next to Legend in the pretty blue dress and red hair. "I can see her. . . Was she close to you?"

Legend froze. "What the hell are you talking about? Is this some kind of sick joke?!"

Sensing and watching him grow angry, Reader gave a sympathetic smile. "She likes to hum a pretty tune, you know. as if she is trying tell you it's okay. She can't speak, sadly."

He continued to glare, about combust until they began to him the tune. That tune which he missed of so dearly. The tune he'd trade EVERYTHING he own To be around again.

Reader continued to hum the tune, closing their eyes and doing their best to match the woman's tune when she felt Legend shaking next to them. They stopped and opened their eyes to see him shaking, head in his hands.

"D-dont stop" He said, his voice breaking and shaking. Reader nodded and continued, and his shaking voice started to sing the lyrics softly, leaning into Reader. They wrapped their arms around them, providing some warmth, to comfort the tired, broken, hero, that the lady in blue could not anymore. . .

This would be like... every Link's worst nightmare. The idea that the people who taunted them and nearly destroyed everything they held dear is still dissing them from the beyond? Horrendous.

ellie taking care of sick reader :

-her methods are just a little bit fumbly because she's just used to complaining a lot when she's sick but not really doing anything about it

-but of course it's different when it's you, everything is different when it's you

-you're tucked into bed and she's so sweet, telling you to let her know if there's anything she can do to make it better and you're like "anything?"

and ellie, ever the dutiful girlfriend, presses a kiss against your forehead and softly replies, "yeah, babe, anything."

-but then you're blinking at her and smiling and she knows what you want and she's trying not to roll her eyes and groan at you because honestly she had just gotten comfortable and of course you're going to request that she plays the guitar to soothe you to sleep or whatever the fuck

-she does it though obviously because she's sweet and she loves you, even if she huffs and puffs about it just a lil bit

-she'll insist on taking care of you, even despite your futile protests of not wanting her to get sick in turn. you might bicker for a little bit and allow ellie to stick around and help but she cannot get too close

-ellie follows the agreement for about ten minutes (longer than she thought she'd last tbh, go ellie) before her body is squished against yours in bed, her arms wrapped around you and her lips pressed against your skin

-if it's tlou universe, you might give her a hard time about being around you because you don't want to spread around whatever you have and she's just like "i'll be fine, i have a strong immune system" and you're like ugh ellie you're immune to cordyceps not the damn flu, or whatever you had caught, ellie was pretty sure you had gotten it from jesse. she heard him cough on patrol and side eyed him

-still ellie is stubborn and insists she'll be fine, she's been through worse

-when ellie inevitably gets sick though she's all "you got me sick" as if she hadn't been selfishly clinging to your feverish body at night

she felt a little guilty because she knew you didn't feel well but also jackson winters are so cold and you were so warm

-ellie's just so careful and gentle about it. how strongly she cares for the people close to her shines through in how she treats you when you're sick, even if it's just a cold

headcanon: donnie is very finicky about his appearance actually

he pays attention to his clothes. how they fall on him. how the patterns match. if they catch his eye pleasingly or if they clash and he needs to change them. he cares a lot about fashion, but not in a Pays Attention To What's Popular way; he cares in a I Have My Style And I Will Adhere To It Under The Penalty Of Death way. i think about the way he makes a logo for his tech when he's a kid. it's trademarked he says of his brand. he cares about how things look. how his name is attached to things. appearances matter.

(it's common in the animal kingdom too, he consoles himself, looking into the mirror and tugging at his new shirt before going to see you. birds. fish. it's just biology. so he's interested. it's fine. natural. not extra at all. he just wants to look good. put on a good show. convince your eyes to land on him.)

this translates over when he starts courting you hard. plucking at your outfits and complimenting your choices. giving you suggestions when he comes into your room and his eyes finally slide off where you're lounging and into your closet. he asks if he can take a look inside. opens it up, thumbs through, muttering to himself. he'll pull together things you never thought to put together, and huh. that looks. really really good actually. thanks, donnie. giving him a sparkling smile that makes him look away because it's too bright to look into directly.

it starts then. before you're dating, when you're just... something. a question mark. a potential. you see him while you're walking down the street. he's looking into the glass storefronts, but the items inside don't seem to make any cogent sense or slide into one particular category. shoes. technology. dresses. flower arrangements. the items all over the place, not anything you can use to try and guess what he may want to his birthday coming up, which is annoying since you kinda want to spoil him a little.

(it's not until years later, seeing it again, curled beneath a possessive arm at a crosswalk, that you ask what that's all about. only then that he tells you he is admiring how the two of you look next to each other: fashionable, complimentary, coordinated;

fitting together just. right.)

I’m sure this point has already been made to death, but I think a major reason as to why more…darker “x reader” fics are so prevalent and popular in certain spaces is because simply put… “x reader” fics, and by extension fanfiction and just general fiction, are probably one of the more healthy and safer ways for many irl readers and writers to navigate through their fantasies and/or traumas. Many of us recognize that our fantasies would be harmful to do irl, so we project it (?) through fiction.

Hi! I’m a HUGE FAN of your story The Big Bad Wolf and I’m so honored to be able to talk with you. I have already read the whole story like twenty times and absolutely love it. Klaus is my absolute favorite character in both TVD and TO and I feel he didn’t get the ending he deserved in canon. I’m so glad you gave him a chance to have a relationship with his real dad, and expanded his relationships with his siblings, particularly Kol. I am trying very hard to wait patiently for the rewrite, and from the sneak peeks you’ve posted I’m sure it’s going to be amazing. Also, absolutely love all the Klaroline moments, those two are just made for each other and I sometimes just watch Season 3 and 4 of TVD just for Klaroline. Also love you chose to eliminate all the Hayley drama, just ugh hated that in canon and I hope Hayley NEVER even appears in your stories.

I was wondering though, do you think you might include Klaus having a baby with Caroline maybe? I just always thought is was so cool in canon how he was the only vampire who could reproduce. And I think including this and making it work with like the mate bond being part of the hybrid loophole would be super cool. Also I feel like a huge part of Klaus’s character and his redemption story is him being a dad and the love for his child motivated him more than anything to be a better person and open his heart. I think having him become a dad with the woman he loves would help him to better himself tremendously. Also, love how Caroline was an amazing “mom” to the twins in canon and I feel like having them have a child together just makes perfect sense and that they would be amazing parents.

If a fic author deletes their work, what’s your take on people who’ve previously downloaded the fics sharing their copies? I’m personally torn on it - I can understand both sides, but was wondering what others think.

This might be a controversial opinion, but I think it's fine to share downloaded copies of fics in certain situations. For example, if a friend mentions they have the fic and another friend asks them to email it to them. Or someone is desperately looking for their all time favourite fic that was deleted and asks for it on tumblr, I think it's okay for someone else to answer and offer to email it to them. I think, as authors, we need to accept that we give up a certain level of control when we publish a fic. Anyone can download it, even if we later delete the fic.

ALTHOUGH, I think posting it in a more public setting for other people to access (e.g., sending a link to a massive discord server) is probably a no-go?? Also, if the author has come out and explicitly asked people not to share downloads, then I'd say respect their wishes!!

This is just my opinion(tm) but I think Moon falls in love super fast. Like not “love at first sight” fast but as soon as he realizes somebody genuinely likes him and isn’t afraid of him he’s falling hard.

Like the dude is used to being the villain and being disliked (kids don’t exactly like being told to take naps) and people being scared of him so somebody being genuine towards him and enjoying his company probably shocks him to his core. Surprised pikachu face that you didn’t immediately run for the hills and now he’s in love and following you around like a puppy.

Sun on the other hand would genuinely be harder to crack I think. He doesn’t crave a connection like Moon does and generally just doesn’t seem to care much for people that aren’t the children he takes care of or are in his little circle. He’s friendly but don’t mistake that for actually being friends, you need to work your way up the ladder from “coworker who bothers me sometimes” to “actual, genuine friend” before you can even think of romancing him.

Sun would also be seven layers deep in denial that he’s in love, unlike Moon who embraces it like it’s his birthright. Give Sun some time and he’ll eventually warm up to it, but he will be hot and cold to you out of fear of rejection.

If my reader characters had no personalities, no backstories, nothing, I’d have no fic. Because they’d have no motivations. No challenges. Nothing to overcome.

Rocks for brains is what they’d have.

Characters have impact on the story, on the world. I’m so fucking sorry you have no imagination, no empathy, no ability to recognize what’s exists for the sake of the story and what you can take or leave as far as projecting.

four books that i can say really genuinely inspired me and my writing in terms of most to least favorite (of course these are all favorites but they can still be ranked)

Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer — for masterful use of symbolism, epistles, the fact that every time i read it (over a dozen times at this point) i discover something new, and the fact that JSF was twenty when he wrote it—lends some belief that i might be able to do the same or similar. read this book when i was 15 and it is no joke the reason i am at the school I am at right now. long story but… this book makes up a sizable share of my soul

All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque — for plot, character, and power of emotion. If you get a good translation, this book feels like a modern piece of war fiction akin to Kevin Powers’ The Yellow Birds or the first half of Full Metal Jacket. There’s a reason this book was one of the first to be burned by the NDSAP in the early 1930s. Absolutely superb & reading this book at 14 right after i had experienced my own sense of unparalleled loss and tragedy genuinely changed my life. A solid part of why i am interested in milhistory

American Pastoral by Philip Roth — for character, specificity of detail, and engagement with politics. I love every Roth piece I get my hands on. He’s gritty and gross and ahead of his time. This book was genuinely devastating to read. It’s so specific it HURTS. Proved to me that details are how you sell a story. There’s like a three-page monologue about how to make women’s gloves, and because of the context every word is more gripping than the last. One of the best ever American authors at the peak of his game imo. Which is not an unpopular opinion, this book is heavily lauded for a reason

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov — for plot, inventiveness of language, and character most especially. Lolita actually isn’t an all time fav for me because I didn’t particularly like the ending (i didn’t understand the role of quilty in the story) but I can definitely say it’s had a clear impact on the way i write and especially the way i narrate. Humbert humbert squeezes out the truth and is so ashamed of the truth that his shame and all his little lies bleed out through every word. He’s utterly absurd but he’s entirely believable. He’s just… I don’t know. He’s just human. In a way that all fictional characters have an imperative to be human, because fiction is a reflection of our own sick and shameful real lives… and that comes out in Nabokov’s diction and syntax. It’s less specificity of detail, like Roth—actually it’s barely specific with details at all because the details are so explicit and shameful—it’s more specificity of LANGUAGE. Beautiful writing for writing’s sake.

But pretty obviously what has affected my writing most is that i moooostly read only straight white men writing about straight white men problems. See above. So my reading list might not be applicable/enjoyable for everyone. i would like to think i write like a straight white man. that’s my goal. my strategy is not to follow in their footsteps or to break glass ceilings but to eventually beat them at their own game. we’ll see how that goes.
